Kathaleen Lanahan was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. She now resides in Lemont with her husband Dan Groth, son Sam, and their dog Reggie.
She graduated from Mother McAuley. She then received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Chicago. She went on to get her Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School.
Kathy started her legal career at the Board of Tax Appeals while still in law school. After working at the board as a lawyer for short time, she moved on to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. She started that career in the Traffic Division. She was soon promoted to the Juvenile Justice Bureau where she sought justice for some of society's most vulnerable members - children. She also worked at holding juvenile offenders accountable when they committed criminal acts.
Her next promotion led her to the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau. While working in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, she has tried over 45 felony jury trials and hundreds of bench trials. Her trial experience covers every type of felony from thefts to murders. She also has extensive experience in litigating pre-trial and post-trial matters.
Throughout her career Kathaleen has had the opportunity to mentor newer attorneys. She is the lead attorney in a felony court room today. In previous years she has supervised Felony Review teams and Preliminary Hearing court rooms.
Two organizations have recognized Kathaleen's tireless work to get justice for the victims of crime. In 2009, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recognized her for "Excellence in the war against drunk driving." That same year the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists honored her with its Outstanding Assistant State's Attorney Award for dedication to justice for the victims of impaired drivers.
In her 24 years as a lawyer, she has earned a tremendous reputation from the judges she has appeared in front of, her fellow Assistant State's Attorneys, and her colleagues in the defense bar.
